Law professor and social justice activist Radha D’Souza joins us to critically discuss human and environmental rights. The entry is free.
Rhada is a Reader in Law at the University of Westminster; she practiced as a barrister, and is a writer and social as well as environmental justice activist. She interrogates the lasting impact of imperialism on social and environmental justice. Recently, she has collaborated on the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC) with Dutch artist Jonas Staal and Framer Framed, a platform for contemporary art, visual culture, and critical theory & practice.
“Social movements demand rights to remedy wrongs and injustices. But why do organisations like the World Bank and IMF, the G7 states and the World Economic Forum want to promote rights?
Mapping the rights discourse and the transformations in transnational finance capitalism since the world wars, and interrogating the connections between the two, Rhadha D’Souza examines contemporary rights in theory and practice. Looking at the struggles of people worldwide and their aspirations for emancipation and freedom, the book examines what is entailed in reducing rights to ‘human’ rights.” (from the cover of What’s Wrong with Rights?
